LOON RESEARCH ON LAKE JOCASSEE!
Talk and Tour
SPEAKER: Dr. Jim Paruk
Dr. Jim Paruk is one the country’s lead researcher in the study of the common loon, and heads the 3 year Earthwatch research project on Lake Jocassee that is in its first year this year. The project is a first ever study of winter loon behavior in a freshwater habitat. Dr. Paruk has been studying the health and behavior of loons off the coast of Louisiana since the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill, and will use the data collected on Lake Jocassee to compare the wellbeing of loons in a pristine, freshwater environment to the condition of loons who winter within the spill area in Louisiana. The talk is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a loon tour on the lake, available by reservation only, to those who are new or renewing members of the Friends of Jocassee. There is a fee of $20 for the lake tour portion of the program.
